This project had humble beginnings. It all started with the clients’ idea of transforming their underperforming urban backyard in the East side of Providence into a multifunctional space. As we all know, space is precious in this urban setting and we wanted to take full advantage of every square inch. The design process began with an assessment of the essential functions needed for this new space. We began by retaining the driveway elevation, creating a connection to the future patio space and formulated solutions for the clients’ drainage and privacy concerns. The design continued to evolve to accommodate the clients’ versatile lifestyle. We created a space which afforded them the ability to switch out and move different components of their project, such as the grill and fire pit. We then had to consider the & integrity of this site, as this is a historical home loaded with character and charm. It was critical that we used building materials and even plant materials that kept true to the integrity of this site. This project’s humble beginnings, this site has now transformed to the versatile, accommodating space that exhibits design integrity true to the historical charm that exists today.
